Infopolicy: When looking at history, those who have been able to dictate truth from lies have always climbed to and stayed in power. That is the single most important factor in determining power in a society. It is also the power that has been broken by the net.

One of the advantages of doing a lot of historical research on conflicts and monopolies is that you see very strong patterns emerge, patterns that aren’t discussed in mainstream media.

One such strong pattern is that powerholders defend fiercely the capability to tell people what is truth and what are lies — to dictate which perception is correct, and which is in error.

Because, after all, there is no objective truth that we can perceive. There are many subjective perceptions of the same reality, and all these perceptions differ from one another because of previous experience, attention to certain details, perspective, and most importantly, the potential for personal gain.

The most powerful ability throughout history, and still as of today, is the ability to dictate which perception of reality is correct, and which perception is false.

Ordinarily, when confronted with this statement, we think in terms of being able to influence public opinion. But it goes much, much further than that.

If you can control the public perception of what is true and what is false, you can control the public’s perception of yourself and what you personally are entitled to. Money? You wouldn’t need money. You could be a god. (Some dictators have done exactly this. As have many religions.)

If you control the public perception of reality, you need never worry about having a single law written against your interest, as the lawmakers would see your interest for the public interest if you wanted them to. The Catholic Church was in this situation before the printing press arrived.

Therefore, this particular proficiency in society is the most powerful of all. This goes like a bright red line throughout studied history.

Enter the Internet.

Since the printing press, it has been true that everybody can read from a number of sources, each of which interpret reality. For various reasons, the ability to interpret reality for others — and therefore to hold the most powerful ability in existence — has not been available to everybody. Some of the reasons are pure guildery — the unwillingness of the powerholders to share power. Other reasons have to do with how power begets power: you need tremendous resources to start a TV channel, and then you can start influencing public opinion and interpreting reality to millions of people.

But for all the power struggles going on right now, there is really one small thing that has changed. One thing that has enormous consequences. Where everybody used to be able to choose from which source to be a passive receiver, each one of those everybodies has now got a voice and the ability to broadcast their perception of reality — how they, individually, interpret truth from lies.

The net is the greatest equalizer mankind has ever invented.

In this hivemind of humanity where interpretations of reality mix freely and battle for recognition on their merits alone, the voice of a 9-year-old schoolgirl in Paraguay who has just received her first laptop under the One Laptop Per Child program — well, her voice carries exactly as much weight as my voice, which belongs to a middle-aged man in rich Europe.

Each of us now have exactly one vote in interpreting the public interest.

This is so fantastic and beautiful it brings me to tears every time I write or speak about it. For 99.9% of humanity, this is an enormous gain. It is the last tenth of a percent that is a problem. The copyright industries, the security theater industries, the political industries that still believe they are entitled to tell people what is true and what is false; that they should have the right to determine our discussion topics over coffee.

This is what the netwars are about, at the end of the day. The lost ability by previous powerholders to separate truth from lies by decree, and how the previous powerholders are cracking down on civil liberties, people, and the net in a massive barrage to try to suppress the voice of everybody — all in a vain attempt to restore their former privilege as interpreters of reality.

Civil Liberties – Andrew Norton: On this, the 10th anniversary of 9/11 it would behoove us all to look at the last decade, not through the eyes of emotional rhetoric, but through the sharp lenses of cold hard facts. Emotionalism can twist any sentiment, advocate any position, but facts are facts, and will always be so. Stripped of their ‘amorphous protection’ and identified into the spotlight, we can provide much-needed context, and objectiveness.

Not all that long ago, there was an attack on a famous landmark building. A group of foreigners who identified themselves as having a belief system were alleged to be behind it all, and persecutions of that group followed. A law was quickly passed to deal with this ‘new threat to the state’ by removing or negating protections under the law. This was used to build a state surveillance and control mechanism, with the stated aim of ‘protecting’ its citizens from further attacks, including the formation of new federal level offices and security groups. Not long after, the country also started fighting international wars, to further protect the country from those it saw as a threat.

If you thought I was describing the US over the last ten years, you’d be close. In fact, I was describing Germany in the 1930s.(I cite Godwin’s law and claim my £5) The Reichstag Fire of 1933 was blamed on communists (Dutch, and Bulgarian) Which led to all communists being persecuted (and arrested, even those who were elected officials). An act suspending civil rights – Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of People and State – was passed the day after the fire. The following year the Gestapo was formed, and then eventually, military actions against other countries, to ‘secure’ areas took place.

The man accused and convicted in a Nazi court of the Reichstag fire, Marinus van der Lubbe, was acquitted in 2008 (posthumously, since he was executed in 1934) since the trial was politically motivated.

Let’s compare 9/11 to the Reichstag Fire. They are groups of foreigners with a certain belief system (religious, rather than political) who are claimed (I’m not saying they did or did not, just sticking to the strict facts) to have attacked a building (The World Trade Centers and the Pentagon). As a result, others who claim that belief are derogated and persecuted. A new law stripping citizens of their rights (the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act ) was passed in a rush, unread by most elected officials even to this day. A new state security organization, the TSA, was formed, as was the ‘Department of Homeland Security, and of course, we have two wars ongoing, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nor are these the only two examples. After the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, the same sorts of things happened. The belief group was Catholic, the law passed was the Popish Recusants Act, and while there were no new state security mechanisms, the use of the Star Chamber had grown under James I and his son Charles I. Wars were absent too, but expansion into the new territories of the Americas occurred at this time instead.

There is a tendency throughout history then, for leaders to feel threatened by actions, to use populist outrage over an incident to bolster populist support that otherwise would spark massive outrage. While it could be argued that the acts did ‘make the country safe’ in that no new attacks took place, such attacks are rare in themselves that there are only a handful of examples from 400 years of Western History. If there had been a law passed in the 1930′s against massive asteroids impacting the earth (creating a K-T event) would we consider it a success? After all, no such impacts have happened. No, because we know that no impact happened anyway. Likewise, without the Patriot Act, would there have been more terrorist incidents in the US? Unlikely. A recent investigation by the website Mother Jones found that of all the claimed ‘terrorist attacks’ on the US in the late few years, all but three were heavily infiltrated, and instigated by US agencies. The three that weren’t were also the three that came closest to succeeding, but also were not stopped by any of the security mechanisms, but by ordinary citizens. Richard Reid and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab were stopped by passengers and flight-crew, last year’s Time Square bomb attempt was spotted by two street venders.

All three failed in the end, because of a lack of knowledge and only AFTER they’d attempted to detonate. If the laws and agencies created failed to deal with this, then they are a FAILURE. What do you do with failures? Instead, the laws and agencies are touted as ‘necessary‘, ‘essential‘, and ‘a success‘. That leaves the question, what are the necessary, essential actions that can be deemed a success? Were the Gestapo and Star Chambers a success too? Their proponents certainly thought so, but how will history judge things?

(Jag brukar alltid fråga “Oj! Gjorde det ont?” när någon säger “Du, jag kom att tänka på en sak…” till mig.)

Det första är mina intryck av Almedalen. Vi hade inga seminarium i år, av minst två anledningar. Den första, och enklaste, anledningen är att vi var helt slutkörda efter EU-valrörelsen. Vi lade helt enkelt alla ägg i den korgen, det var där det skulle bära eller brista. Det bar. Det bar alldeles magnifikt. Andra steget i trestegsraketen har tänt på alla motorer och bär oss med full vrålande styrka.

Den andra anledningen är att förra året, 2008, så fanns det exakt ett (1) seminarium om konflikten mellan upphovsrätt och integritet. Det ordnades av Piratpartiet (video här). I år fanns det så många att jag inte kunde räkna till dem, och ännu fler om medborgarrätt i deltagarsamhället. Piratpartiet fanns helt enkelt överallt, och våra idéer diskuterades överallt, även utan att vi ordnade några egna seminarier. Det kändes som om man inte fick vara ifred någonstans, så attraktiva var Almedalsdelegationen med de piratlila tröjorna.

Som Aftonbladets blogg och Europaparlamentarikern Christian Engström konstaterar oberoende av varandra: Almedalen var piratlila i år.

Det andra är STIMs senaste dumheter, om att företag borde betala STIM-avgift bara för att personer med en dator på arbetsplatsen teoretiskt har möjlighet att lyssna på musik genom datorn. Många har kommenterat, och jag väljer att citera Anna “Ravenna” Svensson, som frågar sig hur många gånger upphovsrättsindustrin egentligen vill ha, och har rätt att ta, betalt för samma sak?

Låt oss dock titta på Spotify, som jag vet att många arbetskamrater använder. Först ska man alltså ha betalt för tjänsten (pengar hamnar hos STIM). Sedan ska man ha betalt för lagringsmedia man behöver för att använda datorn (mer pengar till STIM). Sedan ska man ha betalt av den som äger lokalen som datorn står i (ännu mer pengar till STIM).

Hur många gånger ska man ha rätt att ta betalt för samma sak, egentligen?

Om STIM vill ha kvar sina rättigheter i en miljö när Piratpartiet ser ut att komma in i riksdagen, så är det väldigt hög tid att STIM och SAMI slutar att larva sig, annars gäller ett klassiskt svenskt talesätt om att gapa efter mycket. Vi har väldigt låg tolerans med missbruk av immaterialrätter och tenderar att dra in hela rättigheten i lag utan förvarning snarare än att skriva ett diskret brev där vi frågar om just det där specifika flagranta missbruket var jättelyckat ur ett PR-perspektiv.

För det tredje har jag noterat att det finns ett par riktiga fullblodsidioter till företag därute just nu. Jag har sett fyra: Jajja (sökmotoroptimering), GB-Glass, tidningen City och slutligen Göteborgs-Postens moderbolag Stampen.

Vi börjar med PR-genierna på Jajja, som har hotat att stämma (!!) Nikke Index för att Nikke skriver att de använder riktiga fullblodsidiotier till sökmotoroptimering, som ger stor badwill runt om på nätet eftersom de bryter mot praxis och heder. Vad händer när någon juridikhotar någon annan på nätet för att de säger sanningen? Ja, det hade uppenbarligen inte fullblodsidioterna på Jajja lärt sig: stämningshotet publiceras naturligtvis, och från att ha varit en marginaliserad diskussion, så får alla reda på hur illa de beter sig, både på nätet och i rättssalen. Mängden badwill är enorm och irreparabel. Klantskallar!

GB-Glass har fått för sig att de kan kräva ett skriftligt tillstånd för att få länka till dem. Klantskallar!

Tidningen City har gjort det omätbart idiotiska draget att stänga sin website under sommaren, och bryter därmed alla ingående länkar (ett absolut Nej-Aldrig) och går dessutom miste om massor av annonsintäkter och tappar hela sin sökmotorindexering. Klantskallar! Tankarna går till 24-timmarsmyndighetens webbsite.

Slutligen måste nämnas Stampen, alltså moderbolaget till Göteborgs-Posten och ett antal mindre publikationer (relativt GP, alltså), som har fått för sig att det är en jättebra idé att vägra indexeras i Google. De vill alltså inte ha besökare till sin sajt, helt enkelt. Hur tänkte ni nu? Klantskallar!

Jag har precis läst senaste numret av Neo där Peter Santesson-Wilson gör intressanta observationer om min ledarskapsstil. För att svara på frågan som kommer sist: att jag erkänner när jag gör fel är inte beräknat på något sätt, utan jag fungerar helt enkelt så. Då är det väl tur att det råkar fungera bra i det här fallet. :)
