MySQL har den egenheten att de anställer de bästa och skärptaste personerna, världen över. De struntar i om man bor i närheten av något så gammaldags som ett kontor, och därmed begränsar de inte sitt urval av briljanta tekniker baserat på något som inte längre är så relevant.

På MySQL User Conference berättades det att de har anställda vid 110 flygplatser. 80 av flygplatserna var representerade vid konferensen. Med en såpass mångfaldig arbetskraft är det viktigt att kunna kommunicera. Och engelsmän och amerikaner har en tendens att använda ord som man normalt inte hör om man inte är uppväxt i landet.

Ett praktexempel på det är Linuxdistributionen Ubuntu, som jag använder på alla mina maskiner utom utvecklingsmaskinen. Dess releaser döps i bokstavsordning efter ett djur med en egenskap. Och nästan varenda gång får jag slå upp vad tusan det är för djur – trots att jag betraktar mig som helt naturlig i engelska och med bara ett litet, knappt märkbart spår av en svensk accent.

Edgy Eft. Eft är en ödla. Feisty Fawn. Fawn är ett rådjurskid. Gutsy Gibbon. Ok, gibbonapa heter likadant på svenska. Hardy Heron. Häger. Och nu Intrepid Ibex. Ibex är tydligen en stenbock/bergsget.

Det var då det slog mig vilken självklar idé det är att göra som MySQL och proklamera att affärsspråket i företaget är “dålig engelska”.
