Under 1500-talet, när specialiserade yrken växte fram, så var man väldigt noggrann med att hålla dessa inom sina respektive yrkeskårer – detta kallades gillen eller skrån. Kortfattat innebar det att en yrkeskår i en stad hade totalt monopol på att utföra tjänster inom sitt yrkesområde, och att ingen utomstående fick utmana skrået.

Systemet innebar både fördelar och nackdelar – det innebar en hederskodex bland yrkesmännen, men eliminerade alla försök till marknadsmässig konkurrens mellan jämbördiga spelare.

Eftersom systemet var starkt beroende av sociala strukturer, så bröt det ihop i samband med den industriella revolutionen under sent 1700-tal, med två viktiga undantag som överlevde eftersom de skrevs in i lag och därmed klarade sammanbrottet av småskaliga sociala strukturer. Det var skråväsendet för uppfinnare- och boktryckaryrket.

Dessa kom att överleva ända till digitaliseringsrevolutionen i början av 2000-talet, som gjorde fortsatta monopol omöjliga.
